Welcome to Embracing Purple! This blog is focused on health & wellness which incorporates food and drinks, DIY, self-love, lifestyle, and other creative inspiration mixed with a bit of humor. My goal is to help us all embrace and love our authentic selves, unleashing our power and energy to pursue our deepest desires.
Each day we are given an opportunity to create happiness and to take loving care of ourselves, nurturing our minds, bodies, and spirit. Sometimes that’s through eating nourishing foods, other times that’s through honoring our needs for adventure or relaxation. Hopefully, by reading this blog you will feel inspired and empowered to follow your passion and live a fulfilling, healthful life.
A little about me
I am Lizz, the creator of Embracing Purple. I currently live in Rochester, NY and grew up in Springfield, MO. Being a Midwesterner, I do have a fondness for outdoors, adventure, a strong belief in being friendly to strangers, and an affinity for making do with what I have. I have 3 super cool and smart siblings who are scattered about and I have loving friends, my Mom and her husband Don, all still residing in Springfield. Holla back 4-1-7.
Here are a few things about me and my blog that may interesting to know:
1. I am single.
That’s right. Whether by choice or by circumstance, my journey of self-discovery and growth has not brought me a life-long partner, at least to my knowledge. I have learned a lot along the way about heart ache, how to handle break ups, and ultimately being completely happy and healthy as a solo rider in this thing called life. Cue the Beyonce. All the single ladies, all the single ladies!
2. I am learning as I go.
While I want you to have faith in me and enjoy or benefit from this blog in some way, I really just need to be honest: I don’t know what I am doing. Am I Beautiful, Intelligent, Talented, Charming, and Hopeful (you like my acronym?)? Absolutely! So while I hope to win you over with me just being me, I am learning as I go, so I humbly ask for your grace and welcome your input to the development of this blog.
3. I have 2 cats that are my babes.
My cats aren’t your traditional ‘hide in the closet,’ ‘hiss at strangers,’ temperamental little critters. They are AWESOME, lovable, affectionate, quirky fellas. And, if you are wondering why I love them so much, refer back to point #1 on this list. Yeah, it’s nice to have someone to snuggle with.
And no, I’m not afraid of becoming a crazy cat lady. I’m not afraid because if that is indeed my destiny, I will welcome it with open arms if that will make me truly happy! Ha!
4. I have my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
I cannot tell you how many times the person I was dating would say something like “Oh, so you are analyzing me right now?” Truthfully, yes. I analyze people, cultures, experiences, emotions, communication (verbal and non-verbal) and I tend to pick apart and can see what is bothering someone, where they might be stuck, and what demons they are trying to keep hidden. And to confirm the other stereotype, yes I am a good listener.
On the flipside of that, I tend to look for solutions. I try to see the best in others and try my best to look for the same in myself. However, I recently quit my job in mental health because I felt I wasn’t able to achieve either of those basic tasks. I quit the job and field I had worked so hard for because it was leaving me feeling sick, stressed, and trapped. The pain of witnessing the trauma and hardships of many humans that are oppressed became too heavy and I knew my ship was sinking. I decided to get out while I was still alive (quite literally) and it was the best decision I have made in as long as I can remember. Mad props to those who stick it out in that career! Seriously, whew! Which leads me to my next point…
5. I started a natural, handcrafted skin care company called Raw Ethos
This was not anything I expected to do. I am passionate about being, doing, discovering and creating. I feel best about myself when I am creating. When I started making natural bath and beauty products for Raw Ethos, it has been a dream unfolding that I never knew I had. When I create, I feel accomplished, I feel strong, capable, and in line with my true self.
So I figured, what better way to live a life than making a career out of doing the things that I love? My intention is that on this journey I will be able to share hope and wisdom with you all. I hope to share the healthy, holistic practices of caring for self that have helped me awaken and embrace the ‘purple’ within, one way is to pamper and care for your body and skin. Raw Ethos started while I began sharing my passion on the blog about DIY stuff like making face lotion or whipped shea butter. Since then, it is ever evolving to be about health, wellness, and healing through plants and botanicals. Check out the website for more information or to peruse my products!
6. The meaning behind Embracing Purple
From the moment I came up with this name, I had friends and family ask me, “What does it mean?” “What is the meaning of purple?” Well, that it a great question.
Purple is my favorite color, and apparently also the favorite color of teenage girls around the world. When I researched its meaning, I found that it has historically been the color of courage and nobility. It has also been the color of spirituality and represents the 7th Chakra, the crown, which connects us to something greater, whether it is our higher selves, the Universe, or God(or Goddess). And finally, physically and mentally, purple stimulates creativity, peace and tranquility, and uplifts our mood to be more positive.
When I decided to start this blog, it was really about embracing what was within me and allow it to flow. Pretty much all of the characteristics of purple were at my core of who I am or who I am becoming. I was ready to finally embrace it. No more worries, fears, blaming, or excuses. I am happiest when I am perusing through a thrift store, walking in nature, cooking up a new healthy meal, or honoring myself with time alone and reflection.
7. I eat pretty healthy (80% of the time).
My love for all things health has inspired me to take care of myself in a way that brings me joy and peace. I have found that what I put in my body directly affects what comes out (this is not toilet humor, I swear.) And while I eat a lot of plant based foods, but I am not a strict vegetarian or vegan.
In my trial and error, I found that when I was feeling low or bad in some way, I craved junk, but the junk that I ate made me feel even MORE crappy. Transversely (see, I’m using my college degree), when I ate mostly plant-based, organic, non-processed foods, I felt amazing. When you bring your healthy, yummy lunch everyday, people start to notice. And then they start asking, “What did you make this time?” and they would Ooo and Aaah and tell me “Wow, I don’t know how you have time and energy for that!” It’s simple. When you take the time and energy to nourish you body, the rewards are you have more energy to take care of yourself! Boom.
I believe we are all the master of our own lives. When I finally truly embraced that I am responsible for me and that anyone can literally do anything they wanted, I made a change and decided to take back the power to achieve my own happiness, and I hope I can inspire you all to do the same.
